Using ChatGPT and Other Generative AI Tools on WRDS

Most datasets on WRDS have strict rules against using data retrieved with LLMs or other Generative A.I. tools.

Detail

Researchers on WRDS have a duty to protect the data they use on WRDS (鈥淒ata鈥). This includes not sharing Data with others or posting Data publicly. Because Large Language Models ("LLMs") such as ChatGPT may be built and trained by incorporating the data fed to them by users, there is risk that your use of Data with these tools could effectively share that Data publicly. This would result in copyright infringement, breach of contract, or other legal problems. As such, loading Data retrieved from WRDS into LLMs and other Generative A.I. tools is prohibited.

The following Data vendors make exceptions for protected versions of ChatGPT and similar AI tools. Protected versions are typically enterprise-level instances of an LLM that include a data-protection agreement that the tool vendor (e.g., Anthropic, Gemini) will not use data in queries for any training purposes. This applies to web-based tools (chatgpt.com), desktop tools (Codex), and LLMs used via 3rd party tools (VS Code calling Claude). Please contact the Data vendor directly for further clarification.
